Eastern Connecticut State University says its thirteenth Poverty Awareness Marathon raised $1,100 and collected more than 170 nonperishable food items. The university published the results October 8 after the October 2 event.

Business Administration Professor Charlie Chatterton led the effort. Women’s lacrosse and men’s basketball participants began the campus circuit at 7 a.m., with more than 120 additional participants joining during the day.

The route consisted of 22 laps of 1.2 miles each. Eastern reports that participants collectively covered more than 200 miles; that figure describes combined participation, rather than one runner’s distance.

Donated shelf-stable food supported Shawn’s Cupboard, the student-led campus pantry, and Covenant Soup Kitchen in downtown Willimantic.

The university’s report connects the campus fundraiser with local food assistance. It does not provide separate donation totals for each recipient. This article covers results reported last week; the event itself occurred October 2.
