MANSFIELD — Eastern Connecticut State University is preparing to launch women’s varsity flag football in spring 2027, with a new artificial-turf home at the Mansfield Athletic Outdoor Complex.

The university’s September 14 announcement says the field was completed in August and includes a scoreboard, bleachers and markings primarily designed for flag football. Men’s and women’s club rugby teams will also use the facility.

Eastern identifies the team as New England’s first Division III varsity program in the sport and its 21st varsity program overall. Head coach Andy Crane leads a roster largely made up of first-year students, with recruits from Connecticut, New York and New Jersey and transfers from other regions.

The debut comes during a wider change in college athletics. In January 2026, all three NCAA divisions approved flag football’s addition to the Emerging Sports for Women program, a pathway intended to expand participation and support a sport’s development toward championship status.

A subsequent NCAA announcement in May described a recommendation for a National Collegiate Championship, rather than a completed championship launch. Its projected timetable calls for divisional votes in January 2027 and, if approvals and funding follow, a first championship in spring 2028.

That distinction matters for the Warriors’ first year: Eastern’s spring 2027 season is the local program’s planned beginning, while the NCAA championship timeline is a separate national process. The sources checked for this article do not establish a complete Eastern game schedule or any results.
