ELLINGTON — Owners of taxable business personal property located in Ellington on the October 1 assessment date must file a declaration with the Assessor’s Office by November 2, the town says.

The requirement applies to taxable business personal property, not ordinary household belongings. Connecticut law generally sets the annual deadline on November 1 and provides for the next business day when that date falls on a weekend; Ellington’s 2026 page states a November 2 deadline.

The town’s online filing portal is available only through November 1, one day before the stated declaration deadline. Online filers must create an account using the access code mailed with the declaration. A business that did not receive its form or code should contact the Assessor’s Office rather than guess or reuse another account.

Paper forms can be delivered or mailed to the Assessor’s Office. The town provides separate 2026 forms for the general declaration, manufacturing exemptions, farm-machinery exemptions and unregistered motor vehicles. Filers using the mail should review the town’s linked notice about postal postmark changes.

Late filing or failure to file results in a penalty equal to 25% of the property’s assessment, both the town and Connecticut General Statutes say. The penalty is an addition to the assessed value, not a 25% tax rate.

The Assessor’s Office is at 55 Main Street, with mail directed to P.O. Box 187, Ellington, CT 06029. The office lists 860-870-3109 for questions. Businesses should use the official forms and ask the assessor about property-specific questions or extension procedures before the deadline.
