PUTNAM — A Groton driver faces a reckless-driving charge after Connecticut State Police say a Troop D sergeant measured a BMW M3 at approximately 147 mph on southbound I-395 on October 7.

The release places the observation near Exit 46 at about 9:06 p.m., in a posted 65-mph zone. The alleged reading is 82 mph above that limit. Police say the measurement came from a laser unit.

The sergeant entered the highway, caught up with the vehicle and initiated a stop. The BMW stopped near Exit 43 in Danielson. Police identified its driver as Orlando Perez, 19, of Groton, took him into custody and processed him at Troop D.

Perez was charged under Connecticut General Statutes Section 14-222, reckless driving, and released on a $1,000 non-surety bond. The release lists an October 21 arraignment at Danielson Superior Court.

Connecticut’s bail statutes distinguish a written promise to appear, a bond without surety and a bond with surety. Those provisions concern conditions of release and appearance in court. The bond amount in this report should not be read as a speeding fine, punishment or finding that the accusation has been proved.

This article reports the police account and the announced next court date. No plea, adjudication or sentence has been verified here; the allegation remains subject to the court process.
