LISBON — Couples planning a ceremony should allow extra time for their marriage license, according to the town clerk’s September 29 notice about changes effective October 1.

The notice says issuance now requires at least 48 hours after the completed in-person application. Preliminary online forms do not begin the clock.

Both applicants must complete the application and take the required oath before the registrar. If they sign on different dates, the later signing date controls the waiting period.

After issuance, the license remains valid for 65 days, the clerk says. The town recommends arranging the office appointment at least a week before the ceremony and considering office hours when planning collection.

Only the applicants may pick up the issued license, and the notice directs the officiant to return it after the ceremony. Couples should confirm their appointment and timing with the clerk rather than plan on obtaining a license and marrying that same day.
