NEW LONDON — Police are asking for help identifying a person recorded placing a dog over the six-foot perimeter fence at the city animal shelter early Monday, October 12.
Police Chief Brian Wright’s release, as reported by several Connecticut news outlets, puts the incident at about 1:49 a.m. at the shelter on Chester Street. The person left after the dog was placed inside the fenced grounds.
The dog was later found hiding behind a bush. An animal-control officer coaxed it out, and police said the animal was evaluated, is safe and remains in the shelter’s care.
Police said investigators want to speak with the person about the circumstances. No arrest or charge had been announced in the reviewed reports. Wright said abandoning an animal in that manner may violate Connecticut cruelty and abandonment laws.
Anyone who recognizes the person, knows the dog’s owner or saw activity near the shelter overnight is asked to call New London Animal Control at 860-447-5231. The city identifies Animal Control as part of the Police Department’s Investigative Services Division and lists its facility at Bates Woods Park on Chester Street.
